Peripheral Art Fair - Scope Miami Beach December 7-10, 2007
A work I made while on the television series Artstar where I created a “fake” art fair on the periphery of the “real” one and encouraged a group of locals to take back their neighborhood from the commercial art world.
I wrote the performance as a score for anyone who picked it up at the Artstar booth. It invited them to join me on a nearby basketball court behind the Art Fair tents where neighborhood kids were playing and hanging out. I started the project with some basic materials (chalk), which I used to fill the outlined irregular spaces of the b-ball courts with text dedications to people and things in my life. These became the artworks and the galleries were the flat spaces on the cement. Pretty soon, the kids started helping. First by copying whatever I wrote, and then eventually by creating their own dedications and drawings.
